Kindergarten — Montessori Math in Action

At The Learning Center Charter School, our preschool is a Montessori Preschool. The Montessori Method of education, developed by Dr. Maria Montessori, is a child-centered educational approach based on scientific observations of children from birth to adulthood. Dr. Montessori’s Method has been time tested, with over 100 years of success in diverse cultures throughout the world. It is a view of the child as one who is naturally eager for knowledge and capable of initiating learning in a supportive, thoughtfully prepared learning environment. It is an approach that values the human spirit and the development of the whole child—physical, social, emotional, cognitive.

Did you know that our Kindergarten is a Montessori based classroom as well? Here, this student is working on math, using a counting chain and working with teen numbers.

What Kindergarten Is Up To

There is never a dull moment for our young learners. Students in Kindergarten benefit from a Montessori-blend approach that extends the Montessori approach from preschool into their first charter school classroom. Whether they are sorting, spending time in nature, gardening, counting, learning to read, exploring math concepts or creating art, these students know how to keep it lively and fun.

Preschoolers in the Garden

Recently the youngest learners on campus visited the garden to see their baby pea plants that they planted from seed a few weeks prior. They also looked at two different types of kale and tasted it too. Many kids loved it! They also explored the herb garden and learned about lemon balm used for tea and spices.

Preschool students have been exploring the great outdoors by playing in the garden at TLC!  Students went to explore the feel of garden dirt and see what kind of plants grow in cool weather in the garden.  Students became acquainted with kale and collard greens, and learned that vegetables get their vitamins from the soil.  They also learned that eating fruits and vegetables give us those same vitamins that help us grow big and strong.
